  3. reduction of nonliterate cultures into the specialist visual 
  4. fragments of our Western world. Money is an adjunct of that 
  5. specialist alphabetic technology, raising even the Gutenberg 
  6. form of mechanical repeatability to new intensity. As the 
  7. alphabet neutralized the divergencies of primitive cultures by 
  8. translation of their complexities into simple visual terms, so 
  9. representative money reduced moral values in the nineteenth 
  10. century. As paper expedited the power of the alphabet to 
  11. reduce the oral barbarians to Roman uniformity of civilization, 
  12. so paper money enabled Western industry to blanket the globe.

  14.      Shortly before the advent of paper money, the greatly 
  15. increased volume of information movement in European 
  16. newsletters and newspapers created the image and concept of
